The growing week

This week: chance light rain, highs around 77°F and lows around 47°F.

Rain is in the forecast. Ease off irrigation and hold off on spraying.

In the garden now

Garlic, cover crops and strawberries as the rains return

Last call for peas; sow corn salad and autumn radishes. The pea window runs August to October. Corn salad goes in at 2in spacing, about 80 days; radishes 20–60 days. UC Master Gardeners of Sonoma County

Rake up fallen rose leaves and bin them — do not compost them. A single fallen leaf can carry fungal spores that overwinter and reinfect the plant next year. UC Master Gardeners of Sonoma County

The rest of the month, and the whole year, is in the garden calendar.

At the farm stands

In October, look for apples, pears, winter squash, pumpkins, grapes, persimmons, pomegranates, and the last tomatoes.

Garden tasks come from the UC Master Gardener Program of Sonoma County and UC Integrated Pest Management, each linked to its source. Growing weather is from the National Weather Service. Your own microclimate, on the valley floor or a hillside, will vary.
