What to do in the garden this week, what is ripe, and the weather that will decide both.

The growing week

This week: partly cloudy, highs around 95°F and lows around 52°F.

Heat: highs near 95°F — water deeply and shade new transplants.

In the garden now

Cool-season transplants, native planting and buying bulbs

Sow radicchio, endive, escarole and Chinese cabbage for winter salads. Chicory and radicchio 12in at 80–90 days; endive and escarole 8–10in at 60–80; Chinese cabbage 12–18in at 70–85. UC Master Gardeners of Sonoma County

Pinch the last blossoms off tomatoes, peppers, aubergine and squash. Take the tips off melons and winter squash too, along with any fruit that cannot ripen before the season closes. UC Master Gardeners of Sonoma County

The rest of the month, and the whole year, is in the garden calendar.

At the farm stands

In September, look for tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, figs, early apples, pears, table grapes, corn, and the first winter squash.

Garden tasks come from the UC Master Gardener Program of Sonoma County and UC Integrated Pest Management, each linked to its source. Growing weather is from the National Weather Service. Your own microclimate — valley floor or hillside — will vary.
